DP Annual Trials Explained
IMCA M190 provides a recognised framework for developing and conducting annual DP trials programmes. The objective is to verify that the vessel's DP system remains capable of operating safely in accordance with its redundancy concept and documented FMEA.
Annual trials are not only a compliance exercise. A well-prepared trial programme should confirm that previous FMEA assumptions remain valid, that modifications have been captured, and that crew, systems and documentation are aligned.
Trial Programme Review
Review of the proposed annual DP trials programme against the vessel FMEA, redundancy concept, previous findings, class requirements and operational limitations.
Failure Testing
Practical verification of failure response, including power generation, switchboards, thrusters, DP control, references, sensors and supporting systems.
Evidence Collection
Collection and review of logs, screenshots, alarm records, test sheets and observations required to support clear and defensible trial results.
Findings Management
Clear recording of findings, observations and recommendations so that technical issues can be understood, prioritised and closed out.
Annual vs Proving Trials
Annual trials confirm continued performance of an existing DP system. Proving trials are normally associated with initial verification, major modifications or FMEA validation.
Common Trial Issues
- Outdated test procedures
- Incomplete evidence records
- Unclear pass/fail criteria
- FMEA assumptions not reflected in tests
Ricketts Marine Consultancy can assist with DP annual trials preparation, onboard attendance, technical review, findings lists and post-trial reporting support.
